Audrey Chapman Show - May 2012

I feel like it's raining men on WHUR's The Audrey Chapman Show this month! We're going to have a panel of men join us for the first Saturday's show, as well as a panel of men for the last one. Speaking of the last show, it will also include a longtime show favorite, William July, II.

Plus, make sure you join me on May 19th. I'll be filling in for Audrey for the first hour of the show with the theme of "Is Your Relationship Coming Apart?" A bit sadder than the "Crucial Conversations" show I joined her for last month, but just as important.

Audrey Chapman Show - March 2012

No, I don't believe it either. How did it get to be March already?! Ahhh, the many signs of aging. Time really does seem to fly as you get older. Phrases like "only yesterday," "that was just..." and "was it that long ago" seem to take up a lot more space in your conversations, don't they? Hey, it's a blessing to get older, especially when you're getting wiser along with it. That doesn't happen for everyone. I'm trusting that some of the back talk coming from my knees these days is really wisdom.

Anyhoo, one of the joys of working on WHUR's The Audrey Chapman Show is that when I walk out of there, no matter what the subject matter, I feel a little bit wiser. I also feel as if, in some small way, I helped someone with one of the most important aspects of life - love.

I hope you love at least some aspect of every show this month, especially the first show on March 3rd. I'm hosting the first hour!

Audrey Chapman Show - February 2012

February is African American History Month, a time to focus on women's heart health, and Audrey Chapman often refers to February as Love Month. I guess that's because Valentine's Day is on the 14th, which we all hope is an opportunity to get a little more love in our lives.

In that spirit, I will simply share a line from A Course in Miracles: "With love in you, you have no need except to extend it." (T,314)

Audrey Chapman Show - January 2012

Here we are again, at a beginning.

The challenge with beginnings is that they are prompted by endings, and some endings are better than others. No matter how the ending played out, you're thrown into the transition process. A lot of times when this happens, especially at the beginning of the all-important New Year, you feel like there's nothing you can do but keep it moving - maybe hoping things will be better, or at least not worse.

You are always in choice about how to take that necessary next step into ... whatever ... whether you feel that way or not.

One of my favorite things about serving as producer and substitute host of WHUR's The Audrey Chapman Show is that it always, in some way, promotes the idea that you are in choice. And with choice, you possess a great power.

How will you wield that power this year?

This month's shows all support you as you begin within, one of the most challenging things to do. However, it is always worthwhile, even if it does not always feel that way at certain stages of the journey. So ... if you haven't done it yet, start your engines!

Audrey Chapman Show - December

Wow! Can you believe it's already the last month of 2011? I guess the feeling that time flies is one of the first signs of aging. Another is the increasing pace of change.

Change comes up a lot on WHUR's The Audrey Chapman Show this month. First, the show itself is changing. Starting this Saturday, December 3rd, the first hour of the show (8:00 a.m. ET) will be simulcast on H.U.R. Voices, SiriusXM Channel 141. The second hour (9:00 a.m. ET) will be broadcast exclusively on H.U.R. Voices, which launched today. This expands the show's audience, which is very nice. You really can't get enough good information about how to relate to yourself and others.

Valuing Communication

This past Saturday I had the amazing experience of substitute hosting for WHUR's The Audrey Chapman Show. Wow! Check out my "Living a Values-Filled Life" notes on the show blog.

The show got me thinking. I am a strong believer in the power of communication. I am a very good communicator, but I also value communication so much that I work every day to be the best communicator I can be in every experience. I don't always succeed, but I always try.

Here are a handful of things that have come up recently as I continue exploring the possibilities of communication:

*No matter how good you are, you can always be better. And yes, that can be said about almost everything in life.

*Listening is more than not talking. Check your commitment to the person who is speaking, your assumptions about them and what they are saying, and your emotional attachment to what is being shared. These can all have a profound impact on your conversation with that person. I am learning a great deal about listening from the International Listening Association. You can, too.

*"Just the facts ma'am." Well, not always. Just because someone said something, or you read something somewhere, that doesn't make it true. Check it out. I've come to feel that a lot of things are stated as if they are facts when they are actually data (more often it's partial data) with someone's particular slant added to it. As the political sparring heats up through next year, get ready for lots of that.

*What's the point? When you say something, please try to have one. It's amazing how often we are not clear about where we're headed with something before it starts spilling from our lips. If you're not sure it's usually OK to say so. Some of the best conversations I've ever been in included someone's admission that they didn't know how to say something, or exactly what they wanted to say. However, feel free to pause a moment to check in with yourself before you begin.

*You don't have to speak for a long time to say something worthwhile. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was so short, especially for his day, that the photographer wasn't completely set up before it was over. My conversations with small business people for Patch articles are not that long, but I learn so much from them.
