I know it was almost five months ago, but I've been thinking about Small Business Saturday.
Surely you heard about Small Business Saturday. It's the Saturday after Thanksgiving that muscled its way between the ever-popular Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Its chief sponsor was American Express - which some reported was a cause for consumer vigilance - and its Facebook group was humongous. Humongous, by the way, is a word I say often but rarely write, so I'm sweating with excitement right now. Oh wait. That may be a hot flash. But I digress.
Some people were inspired by Small Business Saturday, despite any possible drawbacks. One family I read about is doing their best to "buy local" all year. The article also includes data from a study showing that we can have a significant impact on our communities by buying local. That gives us a surefire way to help turn the economy around: Small Business EVERY-day. At least every POSSIBLE day. When you're stopping for a bite to eat, try a locally-owned spot more often than not.
I've been spending a lot more time in some wonderful small businesses lately, profiling them for the Kingstowne Patch online "newspaper." These businesses are only small in size. The spirits of the owners, managers and staff are enormous.
I always enjoyed doing business with small, locally-owned enterprises. Now I do it with more consciousness. Let's do our part to support small businesses when we can, so they'll be around for this year's Small Business Saturday, and the next.
